COMMON DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS IN INFANTS
COMMON DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS IN INFANTS
There are several common digestive problems that can affect infants, including:
Acid reflux: This occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort. Symptoms include spitting up, vomiting, and fussiness after feeding.
Colic: This is a condition characterized by excessive crying and fussiness in infants who are otherwise healthy. The exact cause of colic is unknown, but it is thought to be related to digestive issues, such as gas or food allergies.
Constipation: This occurs when an infant has difficulty passing stools, or has hard and dry stools. Infants may strain or cry during bowel movements, and may have a distended abdomen.
Diarrhea: This occurs when an infant has frequent, loose and watery stools. Infants with diarrhea may also have stomach cramps, fever, and dehydration.
Food allergies: Some infants may be allergic to certain foods, such as cow's milk or soy. Food allergies can cause a wide range of symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, eczema, and difficulty breathing.
Lactose intolerance: This occurs when an infant is unable to digest the sugar (lactose) found in milk and dairy products. Symptoms include gas, bloating, diarrhea and stomach cramps after consuming milk or dairy.
It's important to consult with a pediatrician if your baby is showing signs of any digestive problems, as they can help you identify the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
